Main server relocation

Proposal 4: Relocate main server round-the-clock staffed rental computer facility.

Pros
Cons
Increased reliability outside normal business hours (important for office B). Network performance concerns for office B users.
Frees small amount of space in office B. May reduce utility of main server as a file server, especially for desktop computer users.
Separate office AN network trunk may be needed adequate bandwidth and isolation from NWS LAN (cost may be covered by NOAA Networking Initiative)
Inexpensive move. Some cost involved.
Arrangement with service provider would not include Unix system administration services.
Farther from office B Unix system administrator
Slower automated weekly backup for Unix workstation at office B,
Relocation can be performed on a trial basis, especially if PDU/UPS is not moved. Not necessarily permanent arrangement.
Added reason to increase office B WAN bandwidth to dual T1 or T3 May need to increase office B WAN bandwidth to dual T1 or T3.
Fewer administrative responsibilities for office B, particularly regarding aging PDU/UPS at office B Some loss of direct control by office B.
Magnitude of benefits has not been established and formal cost-benefit analysis has not been performed.

Implications of accepting
Implications of rejecting
Continue discussions with service provider to identify clearly what services rental facility would provide. Accept that main server may not be reliable platform for near-real-time transaction processing.
